10 Tips for Traveling with a Toddler

Traveling with toddlers can be both exciting and exhausting. While vacationing with your little one can create fond memories, it also comes with its own challenges. Don't worry! As a mom of four, I’ve learned throughout the years how to best prepare and plan in order to have a smooth family adventure!

Here are ten essential tips to help you navigate the world of travel with toddlers:

Be Patient with Yourself (& Baby)

We all know that traveling with toddlers can be unpredictable, and things may not always go according to plan. Remember to be patient with yourself and your little one. Take things one step at a time.

Organization is Key

Stay organized by planning ahead and packing efficiently. Keep all essentials easily accessible to avoid unnecessary stress! Check out my toddler travel checklist here!

Wipes Are Your BFF

Trust me, you can never have too many wipes when traveling with toddlers. From messy spills to sticky fingers, wipes will come to your rescue in countless situations. Make sure to pack plenty of them!

Don’t Forget Snacks!

Hungry toddlers can quickly turn into cranky travelers. Pack a variety of snacks for your little one to enjoy. My kids favorite on-the-go snacks are applesauce packets, crackers, and granola bars.

Less is More

When it comes to packing, remember that less is more. Try to pack only the essentials, especially in your diaper bag. Minimizing the number of items you bring will make traveling way more manageable.

Save the Best Distraction for Last

This is one of my tried and true tips: save the best distractions for last. Whether it's a favorite toy, a new book, or a tablet loaded with games, having something special to unveil when boredom strikes will make all the difference.

Use a Travel Stroller

A lightweight and compact travel stroller will be a lifesaver for your toddler (and you). Don't be stuck carrying your toddler, here is my favorite sturdy and collapsible stroller.

Dress in Layers

Dress both you and your toddler in layers to stay comfortable while traveling. You never know when a plane will be too hot or too cold so layers will help you easily adjust.

Talk to Your Kids About the Process

Toddlers are curious little individuals! Explaining what to expect during the journey can help calm their nerves and increase excitement. I will try to explain different modes of transportation, the duration of the trip, and any upcoming activities.

Try to Stick to Your Routine (Be Flexible)

I try to stick to our daily routine as closely as possible, while also being flexible. By sticking to regular meal times and sleep schedules for my little ones, there's a sense of consistency and normalcy, even while we're on the go.

With these tips you can make traveling with toddlers a more enjoyable and stress-free experience for the whole family. So pack your bags, buckle up, and get ready for your next adventure!
